Septic arthritis
Most commonly affects the hip or knee
Can affect any joint and can happen at any age
The patient is usually systemically unwell and holds the affected joint completely still.
Clinical features
Fever
The joint may be swollen, hot, and tender.
Management
This is an orthopaedic emergency—Refer to emergency
Treatment is with IV antibiotics ± surgical washout of the joint.
