Causes

1. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism: due to damage to the parathyroid glands during thyroid surgery (commonest cause).

2. Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism

3. Psudohypoprahypothyroidism: it is a congenital condition in which there is tissue resistance to the effects of parathyroid hormone. It presents with skeletal abnormalities, elevated levels of serum parathyroid hormone, and normal serum calcium.

CLINICAL FEATURES

• Features of tetany (in severe cases)

. Features of hypocalcemia

  • paraesthesia,
  • Numbness around the mouth
  • cramps
  • Anxiety and psychosis
  • Convulsions
  • Dystonia
  • Signs: trousseaus sign & chvosteks sign
