Transmitted through nasal secretions
Incubation period 2-6 years
Mainly affects skin and nerves
Clinical features
Thickened peripheral nerves with loss of sensation (Median, ulnar, common peroneal, greater auricular nerve)
Anaesthetic hypopigmented lesions
Reddish. Macculopapules
Diagnosis
Biopsy
Lepromin test
Complications
Blindness or glaucoma.
Iritis.
Hair loss.
Infertility.
Disfiguration of the face (including permanent swelling, bumps, and lumps)
Erectile dysfunction and infertility in men.
Kidney failure.
Muscle weakness that leads to claw-like hands or not being able to flex your feet.
Management
Referral to an infectious disease specialist
Medications-Rifampicin, dapsone
