Clinical features

Fever

Diagnosis

Thick smear to diagnose malaria

Thin smear to detect malaria type

NOTE—If suspicion of malaria is high then remember  that you need  3 daily negative thick smears to rule out malaria

Pharmacological management options

Chloroquine

Mefloquine

Doxycycline

Proguanil

Malarone

For prophylaxis

For low resistance areas- Mefloquine or chloroquine

For high resistance areas- Doxycycline alone or with mefloquine

Preventive advice

Avoid going out after dusk

Use mosquito repellent.

Sleeping properly screen rooms.

Use mosquito nets.

Wear light coloured clothing with long sleeves.

Avoid perfumes
